Waltham
St Lawrence's Sunday side were given a lesson
in cricket by Rowledge in the Village Cup. The opposition
were head and shoulders above Waltham in all departments
as they were put into bat by Owen. Openers
Yates and Mitchell batted with unflappable style working
the ball around in the face of some good new ball bowling
by Raja and Harris. Left hander Yates seemed the more
fluent of the two and he drove elegantly and flicked
effortlessly off his legs for an excellently played
69, his innings coming to an end when he miscued a Smith
delivery and Farnon took a simple catch. Nebbett
at first change bowled a good spell and was unlucky
to not pick up more wickets having bowled Mitchell with
a peach which cut back and beat him for pace.
Waltham continued to toil but Yates and Morant and latterly
A Hind continued to pick up singles at will and punished
the bad ball, scoring a hugely impressive 271 for 3
off their 40 overs. Waltham turned round looking
for batting practice against a good bowling attack and
were soon in trouble as Harris edged behind and Connor
played on. Johnson played the anchor role as
batsmen came and went, Raja, Farnon and Kiani all out
as WSL limped to 34 for 5. Johnson's tidy
knock came to a end as Hind took a good catch off the
bowling of Lloyd. The sorry parade then continued
as Owen went without troubling the scorers and Christodolou
was caught in the deep. Rockell tested the slips and
gulley region with some tempting flirted edges and one
rasping square cut as he made 10. With Rockell
gone Nebbett and Smith enjoyed a mini partnership until
Nebbett forgot to run and was run out for 2 and Waltham's
innings was ended for 74. Rowledge were a quality
side. Their fielding was very sharp, their catching
excellent and Waltham can take a leaf out of their book
as their preparation for the game was fantastic too.
We wish them luck in the next round. |
