Javed explodes but not enough for WSL

An excellent second spell of pace bowling by Wasim Javed (4 - 35) allowed Waltham St Lawrence 2nd XI the rare luxury of bowling a team out for the first time this season. All started well for Waltham with Javed picking up a fortuitous wicket in his first over but in general he struggled to get his rhythm and was promptly taken out of the attack.

Thompson and Lugthart probed away and Lughtart bowled proudfoot with a shooter for 8. This brought Blair and Peter Hayden together who played excellently taking quickly run singles at every opportunity and moving the field around. When Burge got Hayden to drive uppishly to Chris Sharpe at mid off the pair had put on 53 for the third wicket and with Extras scoring well Peppard were looking at a score well beyond 200.

To their credit Waltham stuck to their guns as the Bridgeman / Woolford combination effected a superb run out from the boundary to get rid of Stuart Slade. At this point Javed rejoined the attack and with Nathan Thomas keeping the other end tied up Javed ripped through the lower order to take 4 wickets including the wicket of Blair who had scored a fantastic 77. Lugthart came back at the death and picked up two wickets in two balls to end the innings.

For Waltham to win they were going to need a good start and they got it as Connor and Thomas put on 35 for the first wicket before both were dismissed by the impressive youngster Slade. Bridgeman continued the good work with some excellent shots inspite of losing his partner Woolford as he slashed to gulley.

Waltham however were about to suffer a mini collapse as Bridgeman himself, Sharpe and Burge all fell with score on 70. With Waltham on 73 - 7 Thompson together with Christodoulou began the rebuilding phase as both began to find some fluency driving and pulling to the boundary with regularity.

Thompson was eventually out for 22 bringing Lugthart to the crease. All the talk had been of a salvaging last partnership but all we got was the "Hokey Kokey" as he played a shot then didn't then did then got bowled. Andy Smith lasted two full overs before topping the duck gallery for the season.

Captain Connor was pleased with the effort but realised that 53 extras cost his team dearly. Thanks must go to Peppard for an excellent match.
