A woeful pre-match alarm clock mix up robbed
Waltham of two players as Ziggy Kiani slept through
the Finchampstead debacle. With all the squad assembled
and ready to leave in good time, Kiani's slumber forced
them to wait and when they finally arrived at the ground
two men light kick off was already 30 minutes late.
Waltham then proceeded to lose the toss and be asked
to bat. They got off to a poor start as wickets
fell at regular intervals leaving them reeling on 31
for 3. Chris Burge then begun a rear guard action and
although he lost Toy, Thompson and Hawthorne he found
an ally in Luke Rimmer who added 50 for the 7th wicket.
Rimmer's knock was based on excellent timing
as he scored 27 priceless runs until he was caught at
the wicket off Bellis. At the other end, Burge was playing
his best innings for WSL as he mixed delicate pushes
and punched drives with occasional aggression to punish
the poor deliveries making 62 not out. Nebbett came
in at the unaccustomed role of number 9 and survived
one ball before charging down the track to Bellis and
was stumped. After tea WSL came out pumped
up believing that early wickets would rock a young Finchampstead
side. This is exactly what they got as Woolford struck
twice to remove Kapoor and Davey and Rimmer had S Kapoor
excellently caught by the impressive fielding of Hawthorne.
With Finches wobbling, WSL went for the kill but couldn't
remove the obdurate M Huggan who scored an excellent
57 not out to see them home.
