The Waltham Six hit for Six

Six hardy souls took Waltham's selection crisis' to new levels on Sunday as they turned up to play a good Old Leightonians side at Leighton School. A huge debt of gratitude must go to the Old Leightonians skipper James Swingles as he made a few phone calls and lent Waltham some players to get the match on.

Waltham batted first on a sultry afternoon and after playing a sweet cover drive Owen became Price's first victim. Kiani came and went cheaply as he was caught at slip again off the bowling of Price. Next in was Andy Moss who was on loan from The Leightonians. He hit a few delicate shots until he was unceremoniously run out by Matt Connor going for a second run.

Connor was given a lecture by the old fella calling it "Poor Cricket sunshine!". By this time Connor was just getting his timing in place even though his calling left a lot to be desired but just as the sweep shot begun to bear fruit, he top edged a slower ball and was caught. Batsmen came and went until Rockell played a cameo slog to hit 12 and Brown was given the right to bat alone in the vein hope that Waltham would score enough to make a game of it.

So following a very orderly tea, The Old Leightonians set about their mammoth task of scoring 71 but they were soon in trouble when Chris Sharpe ripped one out of the rough and bowled captain Swingles around his legs. Next ball he induced a false shot from Swingles (2) and he was on a hat trick. At the other end Brown bowled a tidy line and length and looked to have both batsmen in trouble until they cut loose and the game ebbed away to an inevitable win.

This was a disappointing afternoon for Waltham but many thanks are owed to The Old Leightonians club for accommodating us and allowing a match to take place.
