Waltham
St Lawrence 2nd XI suffered a frustrating defeat at
the hands of local rivals Knowl Hill. All told, Waltham
didn't play badly but the inability to bat out their
overs after a solid start proved costly. On
what was to be an up and down pitch, Waltham lost a
crucial toss and were inserted by Knowl Hill and it
wasn't long till Trudgill and Connor had sent for their
helmets as opening bowlers Harrison and Crawcour got
the ball to leap off a length. In spite of this both
openers were scoring fluently cashing in from loose
deliveries and dispatching them for four.
Harrison eventually got one to swing back and had Connor
LBW and things got worse for WSL as Kiani was bowled
by Crawcour for 8. Toy came in next and played some
fluent drives for 16 and Burge played in his usual way
hitting crisp punched drives then nurdling the ball
for singles. At the other end, Trudgill was
advancing quickly to another 50 and WSL were advancing
to what they believed would be a match winning score.
This was further advanced as Cox replaced Burge who
blazed a quickfire 21 before being caught at deep mid-wicket.
Unfortunately nobody could stay with Trudgill and once
he was out tickling a Bland delivery down the leg side,
the Waltham innings was wrapped up quickly for a modest
175 but more critically after only 35.4 overs.
After tea WSL set off in persuit of wickets to win this
game and got a great start as Kiani had Davis caught
by Burge for a duck then got Depledge to edge behind
as Knowl Hill were reduced to 33 - 2. Unfortunately,
these were the only wickets Waltham would get as Millson
and Crawcour repelled everything that was thrown at
them then nudged singles and capitalised on short deliveries
to put on 145 to win the game.
A frustrating
day all round! |
